Myrobalan Mordant
Dye Package Weight: 50 grams
Natural Mordant for Cottons, Linen, cellulose fibres
Myrobalan is a natural tannin based mordant that can be used on cellulose fibres, yarns and fabrics such as cotton and linen.
The yarn or fabric is generally pre-soaked in a mordant for several hours. The mordant changes the structure of the material to enable it to absorb and retain the colour of the natural dye.
Myrobalan can also be used on its own to dye the yarns a soft yellow colour. When yarn is pre-treated with Myrobalan and then placed into an Indigo bath, this can yield teal blue colours.
As Myrobalan is a tannin, it can also be used in leather tanning.
Use Myrobalan at 10% – 20% weight of fibre. Add it to water and heat the mordant. Add the pre-wet fibre to the mordant bath and let this simmer on low for about an hour. Turn heat off the mordant bath and let the yarn soak for several hours or overnight. Natural dyeing is a slow process, not to be rushed.
