Sea Sámi
My Father was a Sea Sámi – not a reindeer herder.
I think that there isn’t much information available about the Sea Sámi or that there was a difference in this ethnic cultural group. The Sea Sámi did not herd reindeer, rather they lived mostly in turf huts and earned their livings by fishing the sea where they lived. My father told me many stories about his life growing up along the top edge of the northern part of our planet.
My father was a great story-teller. I spent many Saturday afternoons sitting on one of his fishing nets as he made repairs to the nets. He told me many stories of life as a young Sámi child growing up in the far north of Finland – now part of Russia. He recorded these stories onto cassette tapes and asked that I publish them someday when I am able to. I suppose that time is now, as the technology has improved and I have been able to convert some of the old cassette tapes to video/audio format. There are many more to still do..
With the use of AI, I have made some YouTube videos, translating them from Finnish to English – and adding an AI generated voice – that does sound like him.
The stories are both in Finnish and in English (using my dad’s AI voice)
The stories run chronologically, so please start with Number 1 and work your way through. These are in Podcast form, so you can turn the ‘radio’ on and just listen and enjoy the stories.
