Tencel is also known as Lyocell or rayon. Tencel is one of the early rayon viscose type of fibres, invented in the 1970’s. Hardwood logs are chipped into small pieces and dissolved into a pulp. The cellulose solution is pumped through a spinneret much like a showerhead to produce fine strands of fibre. The strands are rinsed and dried and carded into spinning fibre. The amino oxides and chemicals that are used to process the fibre are recycled back into the processing system. There is generally little waste product so that this process is considered to be relatively eco-friendly.
This same process is now used with many other plant fibres to produce the wide variety of new viscose fibres and yarns that are appearing on the market today

Tencel fibre is best spun with a medium to tight twist. The yarn can be used as a single ply or plied with itself or another fibre. The single ply is also lovely when used as weft in handwoven fabrics.

Tencel can be blended with other fibres and can be used in needle felting, paper making and Doll hair.

Tencel fibre or yarns can be dyed with natural plant dyes and mordants or other dyes suitable for cellulose fibres.
