Colourful and intricately patterned bands have traditionally been woven by the Saami on rigid heddles made of bone. These bands were used in their clothing as decoration to trim their clothing. Sami woven bands also had many functional uses such as belts, shoelaces and straps for bags. Sami band weaving is quite time consuming to weave, unlike most other types of braid weaving because each pattern thread is hand picked. This weaving method gives the ability to weave more complex pattern variations.
