IKKUNA 2023 Rya Kit

The rya backing cloth is handwoven using natural organic wool and linen yarns.
The rya rug yarns are all locally sourced pure organic wool.
The size of the backing varies slightly with each warp.

This design is similar to previous IKKUNA (Window Panes) rya kits I have made previously.
Each small window pane uses a different hand dyed colour.
Every Ikkuna Rya kit will be unique and a surprise, as the 32 colours of the kit will be assembled from my current selection of plant dyed yarns.

Please Note:
In this year’s Ikkuna kit there is a larger square of natural Vat Dyed Indigo.
Natural Indigo does tend to rub off onto your hands, as Indigo never totally absorbs into the fibre, so it gently wears off with use. Remember your faded and much loved Indigo blue jeans?
You will get Blue hands as you as you stitch the knots. The blue does gently fade from your hands over a few days.
Once the rya wool has been stitched the blue colour should remain. As it does with other tapestries in museums.
If you would prefer to not have Blue Indigo – please let me know.
I can replace the centre square with Madder Root Red.

Skein Weight = 20 grams
Natural White rya wool 6 skeins (20 grams each)
Natural Vat Dyed Indigo skein (20 grams)
# Plant Dyed Skeins = 32 (10 grams each)

The rya yarns are of varying weights:
(4 ply or sock weight, Sport weight. DK weight).
Suggested No. of strands per knot = 3 – 6. The number of strands varies depending on the thickness of the yarn you are using.
Please feel free to mix and combine different yarns within each knot to create different shades of colour and texture within the rya rug.

The Rya kit includes a handmade Rya ruler and a large eye needle.
Rya kits that use Indigo – an extra Rya ruler will be supplied – as it will have a permanent blue stain – save this ruler for use with future Indigo yarns.
The Paivatar Rya Rug kit is packaged in a nylon mesh bag that can be re-used.
Please note that the rya rug backing is quite soft and is not designed to be used on the floor.
The ends of the Rya backing have been hemmed. If you would like to use this rya as a cushion cover, the hem stitching can be removed. The backing has been zig-zag stitched to secure the ends.
