Naalbinding Needles
These nalbinding needles are made from Asian water buffalo bone and horn.
The needles are hand carved for me by a kind gentleman in India. The production of these needles provides much needed work to local craftsmen in India.
Nalbinding needles can vary greatly in both size and style. Much like knitting needles, using the correct type of needle can make a difference in your finished work.
The size of the eye in the needle is important – a larger eye allows you to fit longer lengths of yarn into the eye. By accordion folding the yarn, you can use longer lengths. I often fold the yarn several times, so I am able to use lengths that are 5-10 meters in length. This speeds up the nalbinding considerably because I don’t have to join as many ends together, which can be time consuming.
The width or circumference of the needle can also make a difference. You can adjust the tension of the loops by tightening the loop around your thumb. If you have a large thumb then the loops will be looser. If you wish to make tight loops or are using a fine yarn, you can also adjust the tension by tightening the loop around the needle, similar to using different sizes of knitting needles.
Nalbinding needles can be long or short, and which one you use is personal preference – whatever length fits most comfortably in your hand.
Short Bone Naalbinding Needles
Each bone needle is individually made so the needles may vary slightly from what is shown in the photos. The bone naalbinding needle measures approx. 6 cm in length, is a bit narrower than some of the other nalbinding needles and has a smaller eye.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with thinner and lighter weight yarns such as 4 ply and sock wool. If using a thicker yarn such as a DK weight, the eye of the needle will fit about 2 strands of yarn.
The bone needle is very smooth, well sanded and comfortable to work with.
Long Bone Naalbinding Needles
Each bone needle is individually made so the needles may vary slightly from what is shown in the photos. The bone naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length, is a bit narrower than some of the other nalbinding needles and has a smaller eye.
Carved Bone Naalbinding Needle
This carved naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length and has a fairly large eye.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with longer and thicker weights of yarn such as double knit, Aran or chunky yarns.
Wooden Nalbinding Needles
Each wooden needle is individually made so the needles may vary slightly from what is shown in the photos. The naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length and has a fairly large eye. The wooden needle is very smooth, well sanded and comfortable to work with.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with longer and thicker weights of yarn such as double knit, Aran or chunky yarns.
Horn Nalbinding Needles
The black horn naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length and has a fairly large eye. The horn needle is very smooth and comfortable to work with.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with longer and thicker weights of yarn such as double knit, Aran or chunky yarns.
Naalbinding Neede Cases
This is a hand carved naalbinding needle case. The bone needle holder is a hollow tube with a brass ring that can be tied to a belt or a cian.
Traditionally the ends of these cases were stuffed with a bit of wool to hold the needles in place. A bit of wool is included with the nalbinding needle holder.
The needle case measures approx. 8 cm (3 inches) and will fit the Small size Bone Nalbinding needles.
Of course, the needle cases are lovely for storing other types of sewing, or embroidery needles too.
