Kukka Flower Transparency

Kukka Flower Transparency

Warp: 16/1 Wet spun linen
Weft: 16/1 Wet spun linen
Weft inlay: Hand spun bleached tow flax
Size: 40 cm x 40 cm

“Kukka” Flower is woven in a traditional Finnish style transparency weave structure called “Kuultokudos” (Shimmer Weave). The fragile texture of the fine linen background and delicately placed pattern inlay allow for a changing interaction of light and space, creating a fine ethereal sight. Fabulous simple elegance.

Transparency weaves are thought to have originated in Japan or Scandinavian countries. Transparencies became popular in Finland in the early 1900’s and were woven for use as sheer window curtains. In the 1970’s, interior designers used transparencies to create large free-hanging room dividers or wall hangings.
